Sometimes it happens. I've discussed it here before. Sometimes unforeseen things happen, and you just need a little extra coin to get over that hump. Maybe your car windscreen gets broken. Holy Cow! Has it really been almost a month since my last post here? Crimeny, I need some sort of something to do something to help me make sure I post more stuff here. Although, in reality, this site is kind of dying out. I started this site to chronicle my attempts at making money on the 'Net (and blogging in particular), and I think I have pretty much covered all I can find to cover.

Oh sure, there are SEO things and what not. You something that kills me though? Some of the opportunities from SEO companies - wanting to charge you, dear reader, your hard-earned cash so that they will help you get a better search engine rating? Those companies, will only accept bloggers to advertise for them with astronomical Google PageRanks. Like 7 or 8. What putz's.

Anyway, I see that my Bigsibling blog is holding steady in the PageRank game at 3, this blog is up to 2 (w00t!) and myhometown.blogspot.com is up to 1 (oh well). But at least nothing is slipping DOWN in the rankings. And not moving forward it tons better than moving backwards!!!

Ok, I need to start hitting this site more with updates and what not. Oh, that clixsense thing? Not so much, I spent like 45 minutes the other day, just clicking away, and I end up with something like 34 cents. When they say clixsense they really mean clixcents!

It seems that every time you turn around, there are more and more blogs on how to make money or save money via the Internet. Quite frankly, there are so many, it is hard to keep track of them all. While I'm not trying to tell anyone how to make money. I'm not giving out some sort of 'secret' that only I know.

What I am doing here, is trying to keep track of my attempts at making a little more money. I don't have any grand ideas that this is going to someday replace the ol' 8-5.

I don't know if you have noticed the graphic to the left that reads "Hire Me". This is a relatively new PayPerPost program titled "PayPerPost Direct". The way it works is, you have the badge on your site, an advertisers sees your site, likes your content (not to mention your exceptional wit and prose) and hires you for a direct placement advertisement.

You can always decline the offer, or negotiate for more money for the ad. I don't know if declining the offer will actually inhibit your ability to get more PPP Direct business, but I would assume it would not since these do not come from PPP, they only facilitate the meeting.

Credit Good - Debt Bad

We all want things we don't have. Am I right or what? And sometimes, we need things we don't have, and don't really have the funds to acquire. Seriously. Many people just simply do not have savings. And if they do, it is too little. Lets say you suddenly need a new catalytic converter. WHAM! something like $1300 right there. This is where credit cards can, and do, come in handy.

Now, sure, debt is bad. Debt is the one commandment that was left off the ten. I'm sure if there were and eleventh commandment, it would have been "Thou shalt not carry consumer debt." But there isn't. Or maybe there is, and it is a conspiracy by the banks and creditors, and they went and removed that from all the copies of the Bible so as to make us all *think* it is ok.

At any rate, while debt is bad, and should be avoided at every turn possible. Credit is not bad. Credit is good. Credit allows one to do things like rent cars, reserve hotel rooms. Buy things online. Buy things with the ultra-cool dealio that many credit card companies have that protects your stuff for so many days after purchases.

I have found another place to earn a bit more for those of you who:

That is a place called "Second Life". Some of you may have heard of it. Heck some of you are probably already in it. Now, I've never been one for internet chatting. I guess I just don't have all that much to say. And I certainly didn't see the point in using a chat program where everyone is running around as little cartoon characters.

What I didn't realize is (now I don't know about others, all i know about is Second Life) that it is so much more than just chatting. There are actual businesses in there. Barack Obama has a Second Life campaign headquarters. If you have the talent and the time, there are people who have left their 'real life' jobs and are making their living in the Second Life world.

Just in case you think it is only for the geekish, Rueters (you know the news people) have their own "Second Life News Center." This is Rueters people! And they have a correspondent that covers Second Life stuff.

It has even come to where the US Congress is talking about how to tax dollars earned in these virtual worlds.

Ok, buy now you are probably saying "but I don't understand it all." Which is probably correct. And even after fairly exhaustive research on the matter, I'm not certain I understand it either. But here goes my view of what goes on.

Second Life has their own currency. They are called "Linden Dollars" and the currency symbol is displayed as L$1 or sometimes $1L. But I think officially it is supposed to be L$1. Now, people start to accumulate mass quantities of these Lindens (which is the vernacular - or sometimes Lindeys). After accumulating mass quantities of Lindens, people can and do sell them for real money. I have seen the Lindens on the Ebay, but it is also possible to buy them from people in the game (indirectly). According to the Reuters Second Life site, the current exchange is 267.4L$/USD. I know, it sounds crazy. The have an exchange? For play money? Whatever.
So where is the money being made? Several places. One is real estate. For a mere $1,700 (real money, not the Linden dollar crap) you can buy your own island. Then you can sell and/or rent part or all of the land to other people. You can build up whatever type of community you want on the island.

So virtual real estate is one way. Another way is to make things in Second Life and sell them. People sell clothes (as referenced above), hair (go figure), cars, planes, space ships, light sabers. Think of something, and they sell it.

And yet another way is *ahem* prostitution. Strange, but true. Now I don't know why someone would pay someone else to have two cartoon characters...uh... "make the beast with two backs" (to paraphrase Billy Shakespeare). But I guess they do. So not only clothes and hair are for sale, but anatomically enhanced...er...body parts also.

Seriously though, I think if you have the vision and the time, you could make some good coin in there. Seriously, the following is from the website Second Life Insider (they post these stats every day) - emphasis is my own

Yesterday in Second Life we:

Spent US$1,697,000 at an exchange rate of L$270.7 to US$1
Exchanged US$192,000 at an average of US$8,000.0 per hour.
Market buys were US$115,000
Market sales were US$75,000
Limit-limit buys were US$1,200
The busiest time was at 7pm when about US$11,000 was exchanged.
The quietest time was 10pm when about US$6,000 was exchanged

Do you see that? In one day almost $1.7 million US dollars were spent. In ONE DAY. Money exchanged from US to Lindens (or the other way around, I don't know for certain) at a rate of $8K per hour.

Maybe it is just me, but it seems that if one invested a little time effort, and sure a little money, they could do pretty well there.

Of course, the old saying is "it takes money to make money" and mostly that is true. But in Second Life there are ways to make money without spending much. You don't need to own land to sell your goods. There are places that will rent you a billboard (I don't know for how much) from where you can sell your goods.

You can sign up for free, and play forever for free, if you choose. About 45 days after signing up, they give you L$250. That isn't as much as it sounds as many things, like a shirt, can go for L$150 or more. If you pay the $9.95/month (real money) they give you L$1000 after 45 days, and a L$300 per week stipend.

You can use 3D Studio Max, Maya, or just about any 3D modeling software (even the free stuff like Blender). Many say Blender is better for SL than the big commercial products because those commercial products have so many features, bells and whistles, that are not used in SL. So if you are going to get something specifically for SL, then Blender seems the way to go.

I don't know how difficult it is to create the 3D things. But for things like shirts or pants, it is very, very easy. If you don't want to pay for painting software, get the GIMP it is very powerful, but if you are used to Photoshop, there is a bit of a learning curve. It is very similar, but there are enough differences (keyboard shortcuts, etc.) that it can be frustrating for a Photoshop person to use.

At the SL website, there are templates to download, just make your clothing on those templates, then upload the image files into SL (it costs L$10 per file to upload). Then you can mark them with properties, such as "no copy", "no transfer"(they can't give it away or sell it)","No modify".

In addition to all of that, there are scripts. Scripts can be attached to an object or article of clothing and are acted upon by a number of different ways. There are animation scripts, which can change the way people walk, or run. They can make the avatar sit or jump or kneel or whatever.

I haven't looked too deeply into the scripting language, but it looks suspiciously similar (syntactically) to JavaScript and Perl. So I am guessing it is derived from one of those.

Well, anyway, I am sure there are more ways to make the bling in SL, but I am running out of time for this post (and by now I am certain you are running out of patience trying to read it), so I'll let it go for now. But I will probably post some more on it as I tryout making some shirts (they have very few western clothes in that place, so I'm going to see if I can sell some cavalry style bib shirts). I'll let you know how it goes.

Some great opps from PayPerPost

No, this isn't an advertisement or PayPerPost, but I wanted to pass this along anyway. PPP is having some great opps right now. Special stuff. One is a Police opp (the band, not the other ones). As you may know, the Police recently kicked off their reunion tour. PPP has a Police opp (I haven't actually looked at it yet, but they sent me an email, so I know about it). Stumble into more page traffic

A couple of years ago, when I first started using the Firefox browser, I found this add-on, a toolbar really, for something called "Stumble Upon." I thought it was pretty neat. One signs up at the SU site, and declares their content preferences. Then, when one are bored, or has a couple of minutes with nothing much to do, they click the "Stumble!" button on the toolbar, and it takes them to a page that somewhat fits the preferences they declared.

The toolbar has several other options on it. It has the "I like it!" button and the "No more like this" button. Plus it has a comment button. These are the main ones. There are others to assist narrowing down what one is in the mood to view, but I'm looking at these because they can assist in increasing traffic to one's blog.

I hadn't even thought about it at all since I started blogging. I wasn't 'stumbling' much, and hadn't even installed the toolbar when I migrated to Vista or on my new machine at work.

But, as I look at more and more ways to 'get the word out' and generate traffic for my blogs, I thought about SU. First I started by just adding my blogs main pages to SU, but that really didn't generate much traffic (ok, zero traffic). But then I got the idea to click the "I like it!" button for individual posts. WHAM! that generated some huge traffic. The day after I "liked" an article I had written, I received 161 hits on that specific article. Wowsers, I never expected anything like that.

The good thing is, that many of those visitors, went on and visited other pages. Granted, SU hasn't generated that traffic consistently. The day after that post, I got only about 75 folks from SU, then about 50 people from SU. But the third day SU sent about 115 people. So it seems a bit up and down.

So what I am getting at here, is that StumbleUpon is a way to generate traffic to your site. Unfortunately, all of the links back to the articles are 'nofollow' links. That means that spiders do not follow these links, and thus, they don't get counted towards the PageRank. But for the time it takes to click the "I like it!" button, one can't beat the traffic.

Why I love PayPerPost

Everyone knows one of the best types of marketing is word of mouth marketing. This is because word of mouth advertising comes from a (presumably) trusted source. That is, if Jimmy Joe Jim Bob likes something, he tells his best friend Bobby Joe James. Bobby Joe James is much more likely to believe in the product recommended by Jimmy Joe Jim Bob because he trusts him.

PayPerPost deals in word of word of mouth marketing exclusively. They pay me to post an ad, and you, the loyal readers, read the ad, and you are (presumably) more readily acceptable of the product because you (presumably) trust my opinion.

I made my first PayPerPost ad on December 8, 2006. I received my first payment on January 7, 2007. It was an ad for some optics place. They sold ultra cool stuff like night vision goggles and the like. That $6.01 payout was my first online income. Since then I have posted 34 ads for a total of $243.03. That doesn't sound like much, but it is just over $7 per ad. Take into account that it takes roughly 10 minutes to write a review of whatever site or product is being advertised, that isn't too shabby.

I could have done quite a bit more by this time, but other things in life (like flooded basements) sometimes (quite often) make PPP take a back seat.

Currently, I have been saving my PPP money and am trying to get up to $400 so the 5/8 and I can each take $200 and hit one of the casinos up north. If I try, we can probably look at the end of June for the trip.

Stay away from text-link-ads.com

Back on 11 April I posted about Text Link Ads. Any blog I attempted to sign up there was rejected without explanation. I wrote them an email for explanation, but to date, nearly a month later, there was zero response from these people.

I could not, in good conscience, recommend these people for a revenue stream. While I have absolutely no problem with companies like these accepting or rejecting blogs for whatever reason floats their boat. I think that the reasons should be clear and posted. Also, if a company takes your social security number, they should have the decency to answer your email for cripes sake.

I would recommend that people avoid this site. I can't be sure what they are doing with the information of people that sign up, but I can be about 80% sure they are not protecting your information. My guess is that they are selling every bit of data they con you into giving.

Tooting my own horn

For my blog The Bigsibling Blog I was looking at the stats over at MyBlogLog and in the referring section I found this URL: I didn't know what it was, so I clicked it to see what this "sphereit" thing was. What I found was, that of 5,642 blogs posts that related to an article on ZDNet titled "The artificial nature of national borders" The post I did on illegal immigration was the #1 link!

This simply amazes me. I didn't even know that site existed. Now I have to spend some time and find out what that whole sphereit thing is about.

In other news, the Bigsibling blog has achieved a Google PageRank of 3/10. I don' t know how. That whole PageRank thing is still a huge mystery to me. On the other hand, the blogspot blogs I have (this one, and myownhometown.blogspot.com) now show "No PageRank information available" in the Google toolbar. Go figure.

I think the single biggest thing I have done to boost the PR is joining some blogger communities. MyBlogLog - in which my profile page has a PR of 3 also, and BlogCatalog - which also gives the no page rank message. In addition, I have participated in some link exchanges (but with the My Home Town blog - not the Bigsibling blog - go figure). And some Technorati favorites exchanges.

Oh, this just in, I just discovered that the bigsibling blog has TWO different page rankings. I don't know why. It seems that the root address http://www.bigsibling.com has a PR of 3 and the page address http://www.bigsibling.com/index.php has a PR of 2. See what I mean by mysterious and confusing?

At any rate, I will give huge credit to the blogging community sites for my rise in PR status. I'm now going to head out and find other places where I can boost the PR of these blogs.

ClixSense an easy, but time consuming opp.

An extremely easy way to earn a little bling online is through
ClixSense. ClixSense is an easy to sign up for and easy to use program.
Basically, they have a list of ads. You sign up, go to the list of ads,
and click an ad, then you look at the page for 30 seconds, then you get
from 1 cent to (they say) $5 per view. The highest I saw was 3 cents.

They have a "premium" service which costs you $10/year. I haven't
signed up for the premium service. I believe that is where one would
find the $5 ads (but probably only one a year or so, I don't really
know).

So, for about 5 minutes of browsing, I earned 10 cents. Not great, but if you have some time to kill, could be worth looking into. Their ads open in a new tab or window (depending on your browser) in a frame and their is a clixsense timer in the top frame so you know when you can close the window/tab and go back to get another ad.

I like these places that don't take your SSN, but they don't pay via paypal either, they send a check. Personally I would rather go the paypal way, get the money faster and easier.

At any rate, if you have time to kill, ClixSense is an easy way to get a little extra bling by surfing the web.

Oh, and nothing to download/install. That is always a plus in my book!

7 dollar offers banner ads

I came across a site called 7 Dollar Offers. This is a banner ad site
(see above for an example of the banner). You can color and customize
the banner several different ways. It can be a banner like the one
above, or a tower (like the Google AdSense ads on the left).

Signing up was easy as pie. You go to their site, click on the "Put our products on YOUR site in seconds" link, enter your PayPal email address, choose the layout and style you want, and voila! The code is generated and you copy and paste it into your blog template.

I do not know how well this works, though I have seen their ads on other blogs (that is how I found them...DUH). I guess I'll see how well it works. Seems like it should be ok, they have the means to send the payments (and didn't take the SSN - so I'll have to make sure to keep track so I can make the tax payments <wink><wink>).

I'll let you know, how it all works out.  Oh, and they have a link on their site to view your Ad stats. Of course, since I only started like, 6 minutes go, i have no stats.

Hey, lets try this out, click the links above and then I can look at the stats, and we'll see if it actually works. Come back often and click lots and we can see if it builds faster than AdSense (which, BTW, I have earned a whopping $3.86 from in the past...oh..when did I start this? 5 months? woo hoo).

A domain for your blog

I have been noticing that lately quite a few of the advertisers on PayPerPost want to exclude domains like blogspot, typepad, wordpress, myspace and other "blog warehouse" kind of places. Hey, I have nothing against them, I have two blogs right here on blogspot, but let's face it, if more and more advertisers are excluding these domains from acceptable bloggers, then it only stands to reason that in order to get these ads, one needs their own domain.

I can help - somewhat. I have server space. I have not done much with it. Mostly I host websites for some non-profit orgs (like some Boy Scout troops) in exchange for a donation receipt. I can host top-level domains (that is www.yourblog.com - or some such) for $5/month, paid annually (that is $60/year).

For domain names, I use www.aitdomains.com - they charge $7.99/year for domains. There might be less expensive places out there, but I have used these people for about 6 years now, and don't really see any need to change just to save two or three bucks.

For the $60/year, you get your own email accounts that you control, 100MB of space - that is quite a bit of space. And you can have ASP, ASPX, HTML, PHP and ColdFusion based websites. Available databases are MS Access (highly UN-recommended), MS SQL and MySQL. Most blogware is written in PHP and uses MySQL databases. You will have FTP access to upload your site.

As for blogware, I would personally recommend Wordpress. It is free (yippeee!), is written in PHP (does not need to be compiled and can be edited with any text reader - like notepad) and uses MySQL database server.

Blog Catalog - the mea culpa

Have you ever done something exceptionally stupid? Something that, no matter how you try to spin it, it just can't come out in anyway other than making you look like a dork?

Ok, then you know what I'm talking about. In a previous post I was talking about BlogCatalog.com - another blogger community. In the post I had mentioned how my bigsibling blog could not seem to get approved. I had submitted it several times, always with the same results.

The last time I submitted I decided to actually look at, and read letter for letter all of the blog information. What I discovered was I had misspelled the URL for the blog, I put it in as www.bigsbiling.com instead of www.bigsibling.com.

I am such a dork, and I apologize to the blogcatalog folks.

Sheesh, crow is not an acquired taste. No matter how much I eat, it is always...off.

Yet another blogger community

Yet another blogger community can be located at BlogCatalog. I am not sure what it takes to get a blog listed with this site. My blog My Home Town, was approved for listing, but my blog The Bigsibling Blog was not. The Bigsibling Blog has more traffic and more frequent posts. BlogCatalog does not offer any real explanations as to why a site is declined. The give a list of reasons, and there is no way to know which reason it was, or how to remedy the reasoning. The email they send for a declined blog is as such:

I am unable to find any real information on what they consider to be acceptable. The URL works, there is a button pointing back to blog catalog, it is not new and has plenty of posts, it is not for commercial purposes only, and it does not contain pornographic materials. So this blog should meet all the requirements listed. But still gets declined every time I submit it.

I have submitted this blog (you might notice the little blog catalog button to the left), but haven't heard anything yet. I have also re-submitted The Bigsibling Blog to see if they accept it. I have been having problems with each morning - for some strange reason - the template for The Bigsibling Blog being reverted back to the default wordpress template. This might cause some problems with that. I'm still looking into why this is happening. It makes not sense, for months it runs perfectly, suddenly it starts going all haywire, but that is a different monster all together.

I'll post the results here. As I find more and more resources for getting exposure, and earning some income via blogs, I will continue to post them here after I have researched and/or signed up for them so I can report on the processes.

I know that I have not been as frequent with this blog as I have in the past, and I apologize for that. So many things, so little time. Also, I am going to, again, try and treat the advertisements, and blogging in general, as a second job. That means I am going to set aside specific time each day to do this, write adverts, and research ways to make a little more income.

A little while back I did an advertisement post for HighFivez.com. It is a fairly new blog directory/blogger community. I did sign up for it, and have seen some people on there who are also on MyBlogLog (vicezilla for one).

In the HighFivez site, one may post links to their blogs, and specific posts in their blogs. Other members may then express approval of the post (a High Five) or disapproval of the post (a Pound).

As I have had a post HighFived (I ROCK!!!), I know for a fact that I received at least on visit specifically from HighFivez.com. This post, BTW, is not an advert, it is simply mentioning my experiences with the community.

The more you get your blog out there for consumption, the more people you will have visit your blog, and the higher ranking you will receive.

Communities for increasing traffic

Some time ago, when I started all of this, I signed up at the blogger community MyBlogLog. I wasn't certain what this would do, but I had seen it referred to before, so I went there and signed up. I then promptly forgot about it. After looking at where hits were coming from, I noticed that some were coming from MyBlogLog. I had noticed on some other people's sites (mylifestartsatfortytwo, fortywhat and others) a section in their sidebars which displayed ~~icons~~ avatars and names for recent visitors. This table was furnished by code supplied by MyBlogLog.

When I went to MyBlogLog and clicked the graphic for "Get Widgets" it gave me a couple of options. The first for tracking recent readers (who are MyBlogLog members - it doesn't do anything for non-MyBlogLog members). When I looked at the tracking info, I realized a couple of things...1) People were actually visiting my blog and b) lots of visitors were members of MyBlogLog. This got some fire moving under my feet. I started visiting MyBlogLog much more frequently, and (WARNING: This part is shocking, if you have a weak heart, you might want to look away and have someone paraphrase the next line or two) - I started responding to messages people had left in MyBlogLog - invites to join other blogger's communities and what not. And I started visiting the people who had visited me. This led to them visiting me more (I believe). Also leaving short messages at MyBlogLog thanking them for visiting and finally, leaving comments on their blogs.

All of this creates a kind of communal feeling. Sort of like "you do me a solid, I do you a solid" type of atmosphere. The more you visit and comment on other people's blogs, the more they will visit and comment on yours, and the more trackbacks you will receive. All of this is supposed to assist in increasing PageRank, Technorati rank and Alexa rank.

In this next week, my goal for this site is to post more on getting higher rankings everywhere. The places like PayPerPost and Blogsvertise pay better for more rank. Getting rank is not the easiest thing. I have seen time and again, websites or blogs trying to explain how to get a high PageRank in a short amount of time. Most of these start with links to their demo site from a high ranking page they already have. This kind of lends to the "got to have money to make money" catch 22, where one cannot get a good page rank, without links from sites with good page ranks. However, I do know that sheer volume of incoming links will increase a page rank. With this in mind, I am going to do some research and posting on how to get incoming links.

I hope I am not biting off more than I can chew with this next assignment.

Text Link Ads Update

It is now 15 April, and I have yet to receive any response from the emails I sent on 11 April. Perhaps an answer will be forthcoming, but it doesn't look good. This is somewhat surprising as what I have read when googling text link ads is mostly very positive.

I found a new site for monetizing your blog

Surfing the blogosphere I came across a place I had not heard of before. It is Text Link Ads. This seems very similar to Google Adsense on the surface. They put text-based links (what I saw on the blog I found it on was an image - but not an obtrusive one) on your site, and give you 50% of the proceeds. They pay out at the beginning of every month (minimum payout is $25).

One thing they claim - which I liked - is the ability to deny an advertiser on your site. If you don't like their product or their message does not fit the flavor of your blog, you can deny them ad space.

Of course I signed up right away. Hey anything to generate A Little More Income right? I put in all the essentials. This included my SSN because they have to tell Uncle Sam who they are paying. All of the ad sites require this (or an employer ID - which is easy to get from everyone's favorite Uncle).

After entering all of this information, it sends an email to verify the email address you supplied. Once verified, the site prompts you to enter a blog for displaying ads on. It has about three screens of questions and information to fill out (why they could not do this on one screen I don't know). At any rate, at the end of all this, it checks to see if your blog qualifies (why they can't do this when you first enter the blog URL, I don't know - again).

I searched their site rather fully, and could not find any guidelines as to what makes a site qualify, or what would dis-qualify a site for their ad program. When entering my site, I received this message immediately upon hitting "submit":

Thanks for your submission!

We are sorry but your site has not been accepted into our publisher program at this time. The main reason for websites not being accepted is because of our minimum traffic and link popularity requirements. Please do note that we do reevaluate all submissions monthly and will notify you via email as soon as you are accepted. Hopefully soon!

Again, I could not find any information on what it takes for a site to qualify. Also, I did not find any information on their site for canceling involvement in their program. I sent them a message via their online "contact us" page. The message I sent is:

I have been informed that my site does not qualify for your services. I would like to know what your "minimum traffic and link popularity requirements" are. This would be good information to have for possible future submissions. I don't want to waste time filling out three pages of forms only to find out the site would not qualify.

In addition, there I do not find a way to cancel my participation (and thus have you remove my SSN from your database). If you could provide steps for this procedure, I would be appreciative.

I will wait to see if I hear back from them. I don't know that I will, the whole thing seems kind of shaky the more I look at it. Without letting people know up front whether their site would qualify, they are just collecting personal information.

Another thing I could not find, which makes me even more skeptical of the whole company, is a terms of use agreement. When I signed up my account, it was there for viewing, but afterwards, it is nowhere to be found. I glanced the agreement over, but didn't peruse it. I started to think that maybe the qualifications for acceptance of a blog might be in there, but I could not find it again.

So I went back to the contact us page and sent another message along the lines of:

Where can I find a copy of the terms of use agreement I agreed to when I signed up. Thank you

If I don't hear anything back in the next couple of days, then we'll all know that this place is to be avoided like the plague.

Planning for the unthinkable

One cannot help but think about it, especially if one has children. That thing is death. Specifically what happens to those to whom one has a financial responsibility after they are gone. There are a myriad of solutions. Some better than others. For instance, planning on winning the lottery so that one's family will be taken care of in the event of anything horrendous happening, while enticing and, if brought to fruition, quite lucrative, not the best of solutions.

Most decent employers these days offer some type of life insurance with their benefit package. This is usually a nifty benefit, and sometimes less expensive than other types of life insurance. The problem arises when one leaves their current employer. When that happens, the life insurance ceases. Hopefully the new employer will also offer free or discount life insurance. If not, that two or three percent increase in pay just may not be worth it after all.

With the way things are these days, where people change jobs every couple of years and very few people actually work for one company for 20 years and get the gold watch and what-not, it is not the best idea to have one's life insurance tied to an employer. One's best bet is to get life insurance that is independent of any employer. It may cost a little more, but in the long run, it is much more reliable and stable.

New blog directory - sign up early!

It looks like the Google PageRank system has updated the rankings of pages and blogs. As stated here, my other blog, the one no one has visited (as far as I can tell by the analytics tools) used to have a PageRank of two. Now it has a PageRank of zero. I don't understand, but I have to accept it.

In the quest to up page ranks and get a better PageRank, Alexa score (more on that in another post) and Technorati Rank, I believe it is advisable to get the blogs out there as many places and as oftem as possible. That is where HighFivez.com comes into play. They are yet another blog listing service. One can submit their blogs, then people on the site can rank them. Giving a positive review of blogs and posts (a "high five") or a negative review (a "pound").

Mayhaps I'm a bit out of touch with the lingo of the kids these days, because while I understand what a high five is, I have no idea what a pound is. Signing up at HighFivez.com is completely painless. The worst part was waiting the three or four minutes it took for their email checker to email me a message with a verification link to click on. From then on out, adding blog was simple and straight to the point.

The site appears to be new, there aren't a ton of people signed up yet, so if one hurries, they could get a good position where their blog(s) won't get lost in the shuffle of millions of other (but far less intersting) blogs than yours!

Still hanging in there

I know, I know, it has been a while since I posted anything here. Let alone anything helpful. I will make every effort not to let this blog slip between the cracks of a rather hectic life.

Something I am currently researching is the Alexa rating. I'm not certain how that works, but PayPerPost is now using them in addition to the Google PageRank rating. I have been to some pages with Alexa ranks of...say...15 and others with Alexa ranks of 0 and still more with ranks in the millions. As of yet I do not know whether a larger number is better or not.

Saving on the family vacation

As everyone probably knows by now, I am all about making the coinage. That is why this blog exists after all. It is documenting my attempts to use the internet, and blogging in particular, to generate a little more income.

But part of having more money is also saving money. One must be able to save what they earn, or they have nothing to show for it. Vacations used to be difficult and expensive. With the advent of the Internet, and the World Wide Web specifically, booking Hotel Reservations has become much easier, faster and more penny-pincher friendly.

Where ever you are going, what ever you are doing when ever you are going there and doing it, you can find the cheapest rates anywhere for hotel, air travel, car rental and just about anything else online. You basically become your own travel agent.

For instance, last summer the 5/8s and I went to Cancun, Mexico for several days while the kids were at Boy Scout summer camp. We booked out vacation at an all-inclusive resort online (through a company I won't use again because I just didn't like the way some things were done).

Next time, I will more than likely use Hotel Reservations. After looking around their site, and pricing a cost for a full week in Cancun, it was just a few dollars more than what we paid for only four days with the other online site. It did take a little time to hunt down Cancun in their extensive list of cities. It wasn't in the initial drop down box of destinations, and I had to click the "addition destinations" link to get to it.

All in all, the Hotel Reservations site is easy to navigate, and loads, changes pages and displays the information you want quicker han the other online travel sites I have visited. And their gallery of pictures of different hotels and resorts seems nearly endless. you can really get a feel for what the place you are looking at will look like in real life.

Google PageRank confusion

I simply cannot understand the whole Google PageRank deal. Seriously, it makes no sense to me. I can't get rhyme or reason from it. I...okay, out of cliches now, but still I do not understand it.

Here, I have my main blog at Bigsibling.com, I have this blog and I have another blog, which is a personal blog, talking about family and life and what not at My Home Town.

The oldest of these blogs is Bigsibling.com, followed by My Home Town, and finally this one. The most posts by far, is the Bigsibling.com blog. This blog has the highest traffic (thanks guys, I love you all visiting...really, I do). And the blog with the least posts and the least traffic (zero in the last month according to Google Analytics) is My Home Town.

But, My Home Town has a Google PageRank of 2/10, where Bigsibling.com and this one - which both have more traffic, links and posts - have a Google PageRank of 0/10.

I just can't figure it out. Maybe when I die I can ask the Great I AM and He can tell me.

Firefox plugin for easy blog posting

A cool tool I have discovered if you are using the FireFox browser is the Performancing plug-in. This adds some items to the context (right-click) menu in FireFox.

You add your blogs to the Blogs list. I can vouch that it works great for Blogger.com blogs and blogs using the WordPress blogware. With the WordPress ware, it will list all of your categories. With the Blogger blogs, it does not, but it does let you add tags to the blog.

Also, it gives the option to insert technorati tags. That is cool. What I like most about it I think, is that you create the blog entry in a pane in the lower half of you browser. There doesn't need to be a connection. The Advanced Options button gives you the ability to define your technorati tags, bookmark the post at del.icio.us (I'm still trying to find out what that is all about - I'll get the research done and get something about it up here soon I hope). Also define what ping services to hit with the new post.

Sometimes, when I'm creating an entry, I am aslo doing other things (like working) and it might take me a couple of hours to get one small post up. When working logged into a blog, there is always the possibility of a lost connection, or of the login timing out. You usually won't find that out until you go to post at which time you could lose that profound thought that you had worded so eloquently, but couldn't remember to save your life.

I will say that I didn't get this to work at all with one of my blogs that was running on DotNetNuke. Okay, sure, DNN is not blogware, it is portal ware, but I was using it as blogware (have recently changed that to WordPress blogware). I don't know how easy it would be to use with any other blogware than Blogger and WordPress.

Oh, one thing not to be fooled, by is the "Metrics" button at the right of the blog editor window. Performancing no longer offers metrics. So that really does nothing except give you an error after you enter your Performancing username/password.

Blogsvertise starting to come through

As previously stated, I hadn't been doing much with Blogsvertise. I've been waiting for referrals from them because they don't have a list of opportunities to choose from the way PayPerPost does. Some time ago, I submitted another blog of mine for advertising with Blogsvertise.

Just yesterday I received a task from them for that blog. It paid $10! That's cool. I had pretty much forgotten about them altogether until I got that task. Then, while looking at my data on Blogsvertise, I found that next to my Bigsibling blog, there was a graphic of a bag. The mouse over tooltip displayed the words "Grab Bag".

So I do what any good curious American would do, I clicked it. WOW! It seems that for my Bigsibling blog, I can take one task per day from a grab bag of tasks. These are tasks that were assigned to other bloggers, but they did not complete them in the allotted time. I don't know what the allotted time is for completing assignments, I have always completed them the same day as the assignment was received.

So yesterday I did one of those grab bag tasks for $5 and today I did another one for another $5. There was one left that I'll look at doing tomorrow, that is only a $3 task, but what the hey, I'm going for it anyway!

New PayPerPost opportunity

I haven't visited the PayPerPost website for a week or so. So many things going on with the delivery date for our project at work approaching, then passing, and still working on the project. So needless today we missed our delivery, now it is just a race to get the darned thing out the door - but that is niether here nor there.

Anyway, I hit the PPP website yesterday evening because I had some time and thought I'd try and put up an ad or two. Plus, this site finally hit the 90 day mark and has the proper amount of posts, properly spread out, so I submitted this site to PPP to allow me to put ads on this blog as well as my other blog at http://myownhometown.blogspot.com - which is mostly stuff about my family life, but might be interesting to some, so please, stop on by and take a look.

While I was there I noticed some sweet changes to their site. For starters, they give one the ability to view only opportunities their blogs are qualified for. That really reduces the time it takes one to sort through the opportunies that they qualify for (i.e. certain pageranks, etc).

At any rate, something else they now have is a "Review My Post" opportunity. It sounds very simple. You place a graphic link at the bottom of your post (see the bottom of this post for an example). Someone reads your post, they click the link. If they are not a 'postie' (as PPP calls us) they can sign up for PPP. A new opportunity is created just for them to review your post on their blog. The opportunity pays $7.50. Once they are paid their$7.50 (presumeably after the 30 day mark), you get paid $7.50. I am not certain if there are any limits to this. It seems to me that two or three bloggers could get together and just spend time reviewing each other's posts and rake in some coinage, but that remains to be seen.

As a side note, this could actually increase traffic to your site, and thereby increase your page rank.

BlogCharm Update

I received another email (two actually) from the folks over at BlogCharm. The first was really a newsletter, and the second was actually a comment to the other BlogCharm post I made a few days ago. It seems that BlogCharm is a Canadian company (who knew?) and some changes to the US tax law has caused the temporary halt on payments until the bloggers provide some tax information to good ol' Uncle Sam can get his fair cut of our earnings. You may have noticed that your blogs are loading MUCH faster than before. Well, I was poking around and noticed that there were over 500,000 trackbacks in the system (that's the total of trackbacks from all blogs) and that most of them were SPAM (a.k.a. spings). So, after running some numbers and pulling some strings, I deleted over 95% of them. This action alone has resulted in a 2000% server speed increase!

And, while I was poking around, I checked out the disk space on the server and saw that we had plenty of it...so I decided to increase each user's disk-space from 10MB ro 25MB.

3. Cheaters Beware

I've noticed an increase lately in the number of members who try and cheat the BlogCharm system. I just want to take this opportunity to make this very clear:

1. We have countless methods for detecting cheaters. It's REALLY easy to catch them.
2. Cheaters are a threat to legitimate members. They want to steal your money!
3. Members who cheat are deleted without warning. Period. No exceptions. No take-backs.

I've got several accounts scheduled for deletion, a few under review, and a few more under a watchful eye.

If you're thinking about cheating...you might as well stop now.

I know there is more in the newsletter than just about the pay outs, but I didn't want anyone accusing me of editing anything. And for the record, I can't believe anyone would try to cheat the system. Seriously, it isn't like one is going to get rich doing this stuff. Sheesh.

Just as it was getting interesting

I know, I know, I've been remiss lately. I haven't been posting much in any place the last week or so. We are on a deadline at work, and I've been spending most of my time doing real work stuff instead of trying to make an extra buck or two on the internet.

Although, I will add that I have found a pretty cool tool at StumbleUpon.com. This is a toolbar add-on that lets you just kind of aimlessly surf the 'Net. After signing up, you make a list of your preferences (i.e. comedy, financial, video, conspriacy). Then you click the "Stumble Now" button and VOILA! you are taken to a site that perhaps fits your preferences.

The sites are added and ranked by other stumble upon members. You can add notes to a site's profile, you can say whether you like or dislike the site (that way the stumble people can better guage what to show you!).

It is also a way to possibly give your site a little more visibility (you can say you like your own site and set keywords for it). Then your site will fall into the rotation of the mostly random "stumble now" button.

It's worth a try at any rate!

BlogCharm problem?

I received this in my email this morning. I don't know the full ramifications of what this email entails. My very first thought was that BlogCharm is in trouble financially and they are putting a spin on the problem, hoping to correct it someway before anyone gets the wiser, but I can't be certain. Not that it makes all that much difference to me. I have almost forgot about the blogcharm blogs I setup. At blogcharm, you are supposed to get shares of the AdSense and other reveue that your blog generate for blogcharm. Not entirely a bad deal, all you have to do is post and they take care of the rest (supposedly).

I hate having to write this message to you, but I must. Unfortunately
we have had to temporarily halt payments from BlogCharm.

The situation is quite complicated, so here's the shortened version. As
you should know, BlogExplosion/BlogCharm was sold to another company. The new
company is in the United States, whereas the previous owners were in Canada. The
US has different tax laws and various other requirements that restrict how we
can make the payments - especially to those of you who live outside of the US.
We are in the process of examining all of the possible scenarios here to make

Feedburner Analytics

I've been looking at the free Feedburner Analytics tool. It seems to do the basic same things as Google Analytics. My feeling is though, that Google's Analytics give more information, and it is easier to navigate and find what you want.

Everyone must make their own decision if they even want to use any type of analytic reporting, but I find it very helpful.

So for my money (yeah right, like I'd pay for something you can get for free - after all, this blog is about making money, not spending money) - I'm sticking with Google Analytics.

Thing slowing down...

It seems to be getting harder and harder to find ads to post at PayPerPost these days. I did find four in the last two days, but it seems that more and more advertisers are wanting blogs with Google PageRank of 1 or more. Currently, my PageRank is zero. That's right, a big fat goose egg.

Irony? Get this, there was an advertiser who is an SEO (that's 'Search Engine Optimizer' for you uninitiated - see my post here for more about SEOs). This is a company that purports to assist folks in increasing their pagerank and search engine placement. But this guy wanted only pagerank of 3 or more. That gave me a little chuckle.

Here is an update of my PayPerPost earnings to date. I want to say I'm darned proud of myself for not having any post yet rejected at PPP. So here's the breakdown:

18 Total Posts
5 posts actually paid into my paypal account totaling $39.01
8 posts approved waiting for the 30 days to expire totaling $60.05
5 posts waiting to be approved totaling $26.01

If the 5 posts waiting approval are appoved, that will give me a grand total so far of $125.07. Thus, on average, I'm getting $6.94 per ad.

Not too much, but hey, it's enough to get a System Builder copy of Windows Vista Premium from Micro-Center.

groovin'

Things are starting to come around. I'm getting more into a groove with the posting of ads. But still, I slack off a bit, and other things happen. Things get in the way. Work, basketball practice, scouts, doctors appointments. Lots of things. But I'm really, really trying.

Still, didn't post anything all weekend, and didn't post anything last night. Adding to the lack of time is the lack of PC time. My 5/8's laptop went into the shop. The "geek squad" had to send it off because it kept overheating. Some geek squad. If they were really geeks, they'd have ripped it open, applied some solder in the correct spot, and sent her on her merry way that same day. Geek squad...PPPHHHHHFFFFTTT.

Anyway, my 5/8's is more addicted to online life than I am, so she is using my laptop while hers is in the shop. But I"m still trying man. Bear with me ok?

I'm such a slacker

Last week I talked about treating this making money via blog ads like a job. But I've been slacking off lately. If I wasn't my only employee in this endeavor, I would fire me!

Seriously, last Friday I only did one ad, but since it was a ten dollar ad, I figured that was cool. All weekend though, I slacked off and didn't write single thing. All I did was a little clean up around the house and read. That was bad and wrong of me. I have cut my salary in half (now I only get one pot of coffee a day).

At any rate, I have found that there are a lot of things I do around the house during the weeknights, that could very easily be done on the weekend. Things like ironing and other household duties which take up quite a bit of time. Monday I just spaced, yesterday I was ironing about two weeks worth of clothes because I just kept putting it off. Last night I didn' t get home until after 7 (had to work late...at my 'real' job). Anyway. Hopefully I will get a couple of ads up today. Been almost a week, and there is really no way to go back and make up for the missed opportunities.

The new job

OKay, well, despite my best effort yesterday to get two ads up, I was only able to get one ad up - for $5.00. It has yet to be approved, but I'm confident that it will be.

It took about 45 minutes, which doesn't bode well for the $/hour ratio. Although I have to admit, it would probably take less time if I just sat down, without interruption, and did the work. Even if it does take 1.5 hours to post two ads (and general posts in between), the 5 ads that have been approved so far total $39.01 which translates to just over $7.80 per ad. If I add the last two ads posted (but not yet approved) that per ad income goes up to just over $8.14 per ad.

If we look conservativly at $7 per add, and two ads per night and 1.5 hours per ad, that would mean about $9.33 an hour. Which really, for the kind of work being done, isn't all that shabby.

Problem is that will three kids in school, and parents who are increasingly lacking good health, and a disabled wife, I could not just sit down and do the work. I had to work for a few minutes here and a few minutes there, and eventually got it posted.

That being said, I could have posted another one after the kids went to bed at 2100, but I was pretty much spent. Hell, I didn't do well in algebra the first time around, and wracking my brain trying to help the 6th grader with his algebra pretty much wastes my brain's capacity. Beside, Boston Legal was on, and Denny Crane was heading to New Orleans. Had to give that my full attention! :)

More Income Generation Update

The first $6.01 from PayPerPost was added to my PayPal account on 7 January. As stated, they pay you 30 days after your post is approved. So far, only the first post I made has actually been remitted. The others are awaiting for the 30 day window to expire.

Currently I have another $33 approved which are still in the 30 day window, and one post for $12 that is awaiting approval. It is my belief that it is possible to get a little more income from this method, but that it will take some actual work.

The Blogsvertise thing, I am not very certain about. In the several months that I have been registered with them, I have had one assignment and completed that. But their assignments are few and far between it seems. Perhaps because my blogs have no google page ranking.

I am hoping the page ranking will change. I got my main blog added to the "Anti-PC" blogroll, and now Technorati shows there are 50 some odd blogs linked to mine. I am hoping that when Google sprinkles the magic PageRank dust and does whatever they do to update PageRanks, perhaps that will increase my rank a bit and I can get more income from it.

Also, I have determined that to actually see any real income from PayPerPost, I have to treat it as a job. So this is what I'm going to do starting today. PayPerPost will allow two ads per day per blog. Soon this blog will be eligable for ads, and I wills start posting them here when it is.

So each evening, I am going to spend time scouring the PayPerPost opportunities and post at least one, and preferably two ads each day on my blog. I will also keep track of how long it takes me from start to finish, this will give me an idea of whether the money gained is actually worth the effort (I'm guessing it will be worth it because it's not like I would be doing something else to generate income instead).

If I could generate $10 a day via posting two ads, that is $300 a month. That isn't terrible. And that is only with one blog. If I had two blogs, I could potentially double that, three blogs, triple it. You see where I'm going with this right? Although, In addition to the ads, I would have to keep up other posts as well. Since one of the rules for PayPerPost is that you can't have only ads, and you can't have two ads next to each other, they must be seperated by non-advertising posts.

All of this will have to figure into the time it takes to make the non-ad posts, since it is possible that I would not be posting daily on my blogs (which, while I try to do, I don't always do).

Potentially (probably) when this blog becomes eligable for adverts, you will start to see some potentially meaningless, and fairly short posts. But that is the way of things I fear.

I was recently perusing the FeedBurner site, and found an area that tracks visitors stats. This area is very will hidden prominatly displayed on the left side of your feed details page. I odn't know if this is something was previously a 'pay-for' service, or if I have just not paid enough attention to the FeedBurner site to notice it befre. Either way, I activated it for this blog, and my main blog (Bigsibling). I believe this will give me the same information as Google Analytics will give me (maybe more relevant info, as this is designed for bloggers-I think- and GA isn't so much).

I have spent so much time researching GA and Tehcnorati, that I almost completely, but not quite, forgot all about FeedBurner. It seems there are 3 people at Google that subscribe to this blog (cool - howdy, nice to have you around). And six people between Google and Yahoo that subscribe to my Bigsibling blog.

Yeah, very low readership, but hey, there is someone anyway (hi mom!).

I'll add more info regarding FeedBurner as I come across it. I know the posts have been a bit sporadic lately, but it was Christmas and all that, plus work, plus plus plus (you get the picture

Blog adverts update

I have spoken about PayPerPost quite a bit here. I would like to make an update to my PPP status. So far I have taken five adverts, and have had five adverts approved (w00t! I'm batting a thousand here!). Total amount due is $39.01. So far I haven't recieved any of the money yet. The post has to be up for 30 days before you get any money out of PPP. That doesn't bother me at all really. If they didn't do that, I could envision people putting an advert up on their blog, then taking it down as soon as the payment was made. This way, they are guaranteeing their clients at least a 30 day post.

My earliest advert is payable in 8 days, my latest advert is payable in 18 days. So, within 20 days I should have a cool 39.01 in my paypal account - minus of course the cut that PayPal takes for deposits. What a racket that is. I remember when individual accounts could recieve money for free and only business accounts were charged. Now they charge everyone.

Also, I have finally recieved an assignment from blogsvertise. That was approved and I now have $5.00 due from them. I'm not certain (because, lets face it, no one really reads all that terms stuff) when I will see that. Probably there is a minimum payout or something.

My Google AdSense is I think sitting strong at a whopping 30 cents still. Although, I did just now ad their AdSense for Search functionality to my bigsibling blog. This may or may not (probably not) provide fruit. Come to think of it, I think I'll add it here too, since this blog seems to get much more traffic than my other ones.

Adding a domain to Google Analytics

When you first sign up for Google Analytics, it takes to the are where you add your first domain. You also setup a profile. You can have different profiles for different domains, multiple domains in one profile, and one domain in multiple profiles.

I think this is originally designed to monitor specific advertising and keyword returns for your website. You can add filters (to filter out your own IPs while looking at your own site), and set goals and monitor ROI (Return On Investment). But I really don't use any of that stuff, heck, I barely understand 3/4 of it. The real kicker is being able to see where people are visiting, what they are visiting, when they are visiting and what keywords and referrers were used to get them to your site. In case you didn't know, a referrer is when they click a link on another site, and it leads to your site. For instance, if someone does a keyword search in Google and your site pops up, and they click the link to get to your site, then Google is the referrer.

Okay, back to the tutorial. If you already have one or more domains in your profile, you'll want to click on the "Add Website Profile" link found in the upper right hand corner of the "Web Profiles" section of the GA screen you see when you log into GA.

This takes you to another page where you select "Add a Profile for a new domain".

Then enter the URL of the domain, your country or territory and your timezone. Then click "Finish."

Now it gives you the code required for GA to find your site. It is JavaScript and looks someting like this:

If you have a blogspot blog, you can edit the template (this is for the new beta blogs, I don't know about the old stuff because I don't use them...sorry). Add a new HTML/JavaScript element, put the code in that element (in HTML mode, not in RTF or 'Compose' mode), save it and VOILA! the code is now added to your site.

If you host your own site, put the script between the head tags of the default page (or on a module that is displayed on all pages). The domain that I registered here is really just parked, it is forwarded to my family domain, so I put this in the head tag just before I tell the browser to redirect to the other site.

You might see that it says "Tracking Unknown - Check Status" in the right hand column of the the row containing the domain you just added. Click the "Check Status" link. It should tell you the code was found. When you click "Done" again, the grid should show "Waiting for Data" instead of "Tracking Unknown".

I do have one site, My Home Town that does not seem to be found ever. I have added the code several times, but to no avail. I am going to delete it from GA in the next couple of days, and re-add it to see if that helps. It's a blogspot site so it should be found (blogspot is owned by Google).

Who is visiting, and from where?

There is an exceptionally free tool from Google (of course, who else offers so much for so little?). The tool is Google Analytics. You use your Google account (if you dont' have one, you need one - so when your finished reading this, head on over and make yourself one). I wasn't sure what it would be all about when I first set it up, but it has some excellent stats about your blog (or any other website you set it up with).

Now, if you are using a blogging service (i.e. blogger, wordpress, typepad or any of the other umpteen million blog hosting services available), you probably don't have access to the server logs. That is, there is no way for you to see who is visiting your blogs. Which ones are being read the most, where people are coming from, what keywords are used and what search engines are serving readers to your blog. If you host your own blog, you can get all of this information from the log files (but it can be a pain in the rear if you don't have a log aggregator to put it all in readable format).

Enter Google Analytics. It takes a day or so to actually get it up and running because after you put the code in your template, Google has to go out and find it. So, you put a little snippet of code in your blog template, it's a small javascript.

After putting that somewhere in your template, and getting it synched with Google - remember, it may take a day or so to get it actually cranking out data. You can look at all kinds of metrics about your site. For instance, with this blog, I found that while I don't have many visitors, I do have some from India, Venezuela and Japan. How cool is that? Foreign folks, reading little old me. I am still trying to understand all the data in GA and maybe I can find out how these visitors found little old me.

As you can see, the tool is very visual, but the charts, etc can be turned off so all you see is the raw data (I don't know why you'd want to, but there are all kinds out there aren't there?)

I wanted to kind of introduce you to Google Analytics in this post. I am going to put my family domain in the GA tool to see what it looks like. It has a PR of 1 for some reason, I don't know why because nothing links to it that I know if, but then again, it has been active and serving pages since about 1997, so maybe it has that simply based on it's age. Another one I'm going to do is a parked domain of a similar name. It used to be loaned to a bull fighter in spain (who happens to share my last name) so that might be interesting to see what it hitting that domain.

Anyway, over the weekend I'll add those two domains and walk you all through it so you can see what it takes. Not that it's complicated and you couldn't do it on your own if you wanted to.

Technorati Tools

Technorati link count widget is pretty cool. This little bugger displays (according to technorati) actual real-time links to your blog. This could be a cool feature if you have a popular blog and you want visitors to be envious of the number of links people make to you. However, in my case, the number would be so low it would simply look pathetic.

Technorati uses tags to categorize and sort blog content. Using tags pointed to technorati in your posts will certainly help people find content on your site from the technorati website. However, I don't know how much help that really is since until I started this whole blogging thing, I hadn't heard of technorati at all. And, not to toot my own horn (okay, maybe a little) I started programming in HTML, and my first website had a grey background and black text (that was all that was available to web programmers at the time). The format for adding tags to your post is as follows:

<a href="http://technorati.com/tag/[tagname] rel="tag">[tagname]</a>

There are a couple of places that can auto-generate (to an extent) tags for your post. Looking at these, my favorite tends to be Fintan's Web-based Technorati Tag Generator. There are also a couple of desktop apps that will do this for you as well. But I like Fintan's because it is quick and simple and you don't have to worry about downloading anything and running code from people you don't know.

Most of the tools are fairly self-explanatory. Unless you actually use the technorati site as a portal (which I'm certain they want you to do), I don't see a whole lot of point in them though. All in all, other than being able to see how many, and which, blogs link to your blog, there isn't a whole lot at technorati that really floats my boat.

According to the technorati.com "About Us" section, they are:

Technorati is the recognized authority on what's happening on the World Live Web, right now. The Live Web is the dynamic and always-updating portion of the Web. We search, surface, and organize blogs and the other forms of independent, user-generated content (photos, videos, voting, etc.) increasingly referred to as “citizen media.”

Armed with this information, one who is interested in making any kind of money by blogging, it seems, should setup a technorati account and claim all of their blogs. It is a quick and easy way to view how many (and what) other blogs link to your blogs. This can be useful to see where things are coming from, and probably who else is reading your blogs. Sure, you can get all of this informaiton from your server logs (if you have access to these). I haven't yet found a way here in blogspot to see who visits and from where. There is probably a way to do this, but I'm new to all this blogging stuff, and quite frankly, haven't delved too deeply into this aspect yet.

For instance, in my main blog, Bigsibling, I can view the server logs and see that someone actually connected to it via a nokia phone. That is sooo cool. I only wish I could tell who it was and why they visted my blog on their phone. But I digress.

I'm not 100% certain of technorati's data. For instance, for this here blog here it shows there are "3 links from two blogs" but under that it says "No Links". You can see for yourself here. And then again, just because someone says they are the end-all-and-be-all of blog tracking, does that really make it so? Probably not, but I figure it couldn't hurt because, heh, its free!

The cool thing is, you can put any website in their search bar and see what blogs link to it. I have one that isn't really a site, just pretty much parked, but some garage in Spain has linked to the address, I believe it to be a mistake because it is supposed to link to some city council site for a city in Spain.

At any rate, it's a cool place, there are some tools there that can be used. Those will have to be discussed in greater detail in later posts. I just wanted to get something up since it has been several days since my last post (hey, gimme a break, I been sick....sheesh).

I got bling!

Today I scoured the PayPerPost website, and found an offer that didn't look too bad. They made no mention of any required PageRank, so I took the offer. I wrote a 50 word advertisement for the site, and banked $6.01! w00t!!!

I mean, I know, $6.01 for a 50 word piece of advertising, that's only 12.02 cents per word (actually a little less because I ended up with like 60 words, but I'll let it slide). I don't know if 12 cents a word is good or not, but it only took me about 15 minutes to check out the clients website and slap some words down saying what a great place it looked like. And, seriously, they have some cool stuff there (like thermal and heat seeker scopes).

PageRanks in a nutshell

Now that my oldest blog has been accepted by PayPerPost, I start looking through the offers available. I see quite a few with a restriction for "PR 4+" or "PR 3+" etc. I'm thinking to myself "what the heck is a PR and how do you get one?"

I start looking at the PayPerPost site and can find nothing. I check the help and everywhere else I can think of, but nothing on what PR is or how to get it. Then I run across another offer that wants blogs with a "Google Page Ranking of 1 or better." Okay, Page Ranking, PR that makes sense. Then it hits me, "what the hell is a page ranking and how do you get it?" That's when I look at the Google Toolbar in my FireFox browser and notice a little white and green rectangle under the words "PageRank". AHA! That is what they mean, of course, as I mouse over the white box while my page is displayed, it says 0/10. Well that stinks.

A quick Google search of "Google Page Rank" brings me several pages describing how page ranking works and the formulae that goes into it (like I would understand all that math stuff...I get confused just watching commercials for Numb3rs).

The best definition of how PageRank works I found at Wikipedia. This gives some good history, an layman's explanation as well as all those formulae and sigmas about how the rank is acheived. In simpleton's terms, your page is ranked based on how many pages link to it, in addition, the rank of the pages that link to yours is taken into account. So if a page ranked 10/10 has a link to your page, it carries more weight than a page ranked 1/10 that has a link to your page. You get a couple of extra points for big pages being linked to your site than for lesser-known pages being linked to your site.

In trying to find how to increase your page ranking, I came across some of those that are peddling ways to improve your page rank. These programs seem to run about $150. No way am I going to do that (the whole idea here is for extra income, not extra outflow). I don't know how well these work, and I'm not going to fork over the money to find out.

There are a couple of sites I did find that appear to have some steps to help improve one's PageRank.

Web Rank Info - they also have some other areas about Search Engine Optomization (SEO) that I haven't dug into yet.

WebDesign & Review - I think they guy also has an SEO site.

Long story short, the only valid way to get a higher PageRank, is to somehow get other people to link to your site. Preferably people with high page rankings. I don't know if blog rolls can help with this, but they certainly can't hurt. So try to get on as many blogrolls as you can would be my guess.

As for Blogsvertise, I'm still waiting for any assignments. Although the Prince of Thrift tells me it can take a while for Blogsvertise to get in touch. We'll wait and see what happens (what else am I gonna do right?)

Blogsvertise experience

Another pay to post site is called Blogsvertise. This site on the surface appears fairly easy and straightforward. You sign up, submit your website, and they will give you assignments. However, it has been close to a month since I signed up and still not one assignment. I check most every day but haven't heard a peep from them. Unlike PayPerPost where you can browse the active assignments and pick and choose the ones you want, with Blogsvertise, it appears you have to wait for them to assign something to you specifically.

A lot of these trails I picked up from 'supermom_in_ny' at squidoo.com - but I think she might be exaggerating her experience just a little. Nothing wrong with that per se, but while she talks about places to make money, and calls them tutorials (at least they show up when I google something like 'blogsvertise tutorial') - however there is actually very little information there on how to get things going.

PayPerPost archive work-a-round?

In researching more about PayPerPost, I ran across this entry at The Daily Hook. Which lead me to this page which discusses how to 're-activate' an old disused blog. I do have an older blog on which I put a couple of posts way back when I started it in May of 2006, and about maybe 10 between then and November. I had aready submitted this blog to PayPerPost and was rejected because it said there had to be 20 entries in the last 90 days, so I started on the entries and through the month of November and the first couple of days in December I was able to get the 20 posts required. Then I re-read their rules and discovered that the 20 posts could not primarily be in one month, and there could not be a 30 day period in the past 90 days where no posts were made.

So, in reading the above mentioned article I went back and moved some posts from July up to September, and posts from September up to October (I hand't posted anything in the whole month of October). Now I have a sprinkling of posts over the past 90 days and have resubmitted the site for acceptance. We'll see what happens, and I'll let everyone know!

Ok, found a site that looks like it pays not too bad for blogging. The site is http://www.payperpost.com and it seems legit. However, there are some issues with who they will pay to blog. They won't pay for posts to sites designed to pay people to blog. PPP lists the following sites (I'll follow up on them in the near future):
blogcharm
bloggerparty
writingup.com

I have heard of blogcharm, and started a couple of blogs there (At The Top Of My Lungs and CSharp Follies) although I've tried to keep them updated, I haven't seen 1 red cent (or a copper cent either for that matter). But I'm nothing if not peristant.

The other two I know nothing about, but like I said, I will research those.

Okay, back to payerperpost.com. Several other items in their service agreement that gives a newbie pause are some restrictions.

The blog must be older than 90 days, and must have at least 20 posts in the past 90 days, and must not have gone more than 3o days without any posts in the past 90 days, and the 20 posts in the past 90 days cannot have been in the same month.
Blogs must be live for a minimum of 90 days, counted from the Blog's first post, with at least 20 pre-existing posts prior to using our service. Verification of existence will be provided via third party spider.
A submitted blog must have no more than a 30-day gap between posts in the past 90 days.

Blogs must have 20 posts over the passed 90 days. The majority of those posts may not be in one solid month.
So, there you have everything I know about this one. I do happen to have a blog that is older than 90 days and submitted it, but it was refused because it didn't have 20 posts in the past 90 days. So I started posting like crazy, and in the past 6 weeks, I've been able to get about 30 posts for the past 90 days.

However, I think I didn't post anything at all during October. So I expect the resubmit will be denied as well. If it is, I will resubmit it at the end of January and see what happens.

Cruising around trying to find information on making money via the web, I ran across this lady at squidoo.com, which led me to some of her other blogs about making money. I haven't tried these yet, but I'm going to definately try some and let you know about the experiences.

Looks like she has some pretty good information, at least on the surface.

Still trying to figure out all the linkage and the like and how to get things rolling with being linked to other things.

Okay, so I am reading some other places about how people are making money blogging. Not much mind you, but a little bit here and a little bit there. And hey, for a family of five with a single income because my wife is disabled, and having to commute 130 miles round trip to get to work, and with the gas prices fluctuating they way they are, even with a little 65+ MPG car like the Honda Insight, every little bit helps right?

This site I'm going to talk about my experiences in the attempts to earn a little extra bling by doing this whole blogging thing. I'm all new to this, so this is going to take some learning. Granted, I am a software developer, but I'm not very knowledgable in the world of blogging. I read blogs all the time, mostly news blogs - but I have been reading more and more non-news blogs. It was one of those blogs that got me to thinking if I can really get an extra $50 a month or so by doing this.

Like I said, there is a learning curve. For instance, at Technorati, they can tell you how many blogs are linked to your blogs. I currently have several blogs that I have setup and one that is real active, the others are updated two to three days a week. This one I hope to update daily as I wind my way through the avenues, side streets and back alleys of the blogosphere. Ok, back to what I was talking about. At Technorati they have this deal that is supposed to tell you what blogs are linked to your blogs. So I put in a post in my seperate blogs with a link to each other. But Technorati says none of my blogs are linked to by any other blog.

Then again, I only did all this today, so maybe it will take some time to filter through. I just don't know. See, this is one of those learning curve things I have to get used to.
